Artist Profiles

Beth Hetzel

Originally from Northeast Ohio, I moved to Cleveland, Tennessee in 2006. Art has been an integral part of my life for as long as I can remember. I am the great-great granddaughter of Pennsylvania painter George Hetzel. I have two daughters and four stepdaughters, and motherhood has been the most challenging yet fulfilling job I have held thus far. I find art in everything from painting to cooking and fiber arts.

My sister Rebecca and I opened Hetzel Art Studio & Gallery in 2019. We had previously worked in our independent studios for 20 years, and Hetzel has grown into a vibrant hub for networking and nurturing artistic talent.

With 30 years of experience as a multidisciplinary artist, I teach beginners as well as advanced classes in various mediums for all ages.

My preferred artistic approach involves starting a painting with a free-flowing mindset, devoid of a preconceived notion. I begin with watered hues, creating shapes until the subject matter emerges organically. From there, I refine and detail the composition, often allowing it to morph and transform several times before committing to the final details. Music and nature are my muses.

My artistic process is characterized by a dynamic interplay between fluidity and rigidity. I strive to strike a balance between these contrasting elements while preserving the intended emotion. This inherent contradiction mirrors my approach to life, where I have somehow managed to find balance despite my inherent penchant for contrarian tendencies. I am drawn to people, places, and things that possess a veiled depth, revealing a hidden complexity beneath their initial appearance.
